ENGINEERING FIELDS PROJECT

SUMMARY:

The goal of this assignment was to explore and research one of the many fields of engineering that piqued our interest. The broad categories of engineering that we were allowed to choose from were aerospace, agricultural, biomedical, chemical, civil, computer hardware, electrical. electronics, environmental, health and safety, industrial, marine and ocean, materials, mechanical, mining and geological, nuclear, and petroleum.

To convey our greater knowledge of the engineering field we desired to research,  we compiled our research into a poster. This poster consisted of specific information such as:

  • what an engineer (in that particular field) might do in a typical day

  • the typical starting salary

  • basic education required for the field

  • why we wanted to pursue that specific field of engineering

We had to do so  in a way that was creative and insightful which would clearly and effectively portray our findings. Below is my final product as well as my reflection on the project.

REFLECTION:

Learning:

I learned how to appropriately cite using APA formatting, something I had not experienced in my core classes.  Considering that this was the first major assignment of the year, I was already thinking of what skills I needed to draw on from Intro to Engineering (IED), but I learned that I needed to improve them to reach a better understanding of my work. Specifically, the "testing prototype" phase of the design process drastically aided me in identio summarize, this project ignited my desire to dive into the aerospace engineering field even more. Additionally, I also learned  how to cite sources by APA (it was my first time using APA formatting compared to the typical MLA formatting that my other classes required), as well as how to effectively organize research information in a more professional form than I was used to.

Improvements:

I felt that I could have put in a greater amount of effort into my project - not the final product, but just gathering information in general. This means accessing a greater amount of available resources to gather more knowledge and gain a better understanding of aerospace engineering. While I was inspired to look further into the field of engineering I wanted to pursue in the future, I cannot say that I reliably gained specific information on what I need to do to soar into the field of aerospace engineering. I think if I took more time to gather more precise information, and put a greater amount of effort to this assignment which I regarded as insignificant, I may have gathered  a more in-depth understanding of aerospace engineering.
