I thought the second semester in the Independent Study and Mentorship program would be more or less similar to the first semester, but boy, was I wrong. There is a lot more to do, and I look forward to taking on the new challenges that come my way in 2021. 2020 was not my best year in regards to the expansion of my horizons, but I intend to try it all in 2021: polishing my interpersonal skills, nourishing my passion for aerospace engineering, learning about structural analysis from Daniel, and cultivating the hard skills I need for specializing in aerospace engineering. Getting back into the saddle with assessments and these blogs has really helped me appreciate the opportunities that are available to me in the Independent Study and Mentorship program, especially the large degree of freedom that is granted to me to pursue my career interests. Daniel has already lent me a large degree of resources in regards to learning about spacecraft, which I never would have discovered on my own. Despite it being only a few weeks since the beginning of my mentorship under Daniel, I already have learned how crucial it is to be resourceful and persistent with my passion. One way I plan to account for my current inexperience with researching useful resources is by going above and beyond in digesting the various resources Daniel has lent me to look into and finding some of my own that may benefit me on my track to working on my final product. Another thing that I want to work on is email communication, as virtually every aerospace professional I have interviewed has stated that communication is imperative to succeeding in the workplace. I have a general understanding of how to write emails, but I think in order to take my communication skills to the next level, I need to learn how to understand and appropriately communicate in a technical manner with others. Since my mentorship is digital, practicing with Daniel will undoubtedly aid me in my pursuit of this new horizon. From here on out there is only my own time in ISM; I want to make the most of my mentorship which is why I am setting new heights for myself to reach in this new year.
